Steuben Commemorates 'The Golden Bowl' film

CORNING - Steuben crystal, already world renowned for its quality and artistic beauty has made it to the big time, Hollywood style. Steuben has been asked by Merchant Ivory Productions to create 50 artist renderings of "The Golden Bowl," the centerpiece of a movie based on a novel of the same name by Henry James. Steuben's "The Golden Bowl" - available for $14,000 each at Circline.com - marks first both for Steuben and the movie industry. "This is the first time that a major movie production company is using a luxury-market item as a collectible for the movie," said Kevin Regan, national corporate sales manager for Steuben. He said the rites for the Steuben piece came from Ismail Merchant who, together with James Ivory, has produced dozens of period movies, including "The Bostonians," "Jefferson in Paris" and "The Remains of the Day." "Steuben got chosen because we're the best of the best at what we do," Regan said. "Merchant came through Circline to Steuben, knowing that he wanted to deal with the best crystal maker in the world. He proposed this idea that we generate a collectible off this movie." The movie - which will be in theaters on April 27 - stars Kate Beckinsale, James Fox, Anjelica Huston, Nick Nolte, Jeremy Northam, Medeleine Potter and Uma Thurman. In Henry James's book, The Golden Bowl becomes the centerpiece of a story of intrigue and infidelity. "The bowl actually represents a love triangle gone bad." Regan said. Steuben's version of The Golden Bowl also marks the first time the company has incorporated solid gold into its crystal creations, according to a prepared statement. Through gold was added to Carder Steuben crystal to create Aurene art glass before 1933, gold hasn't been used by Steuben since and never in such a pure form. The Golden Bowl is the creation of Steuben designer Eric Hilton. To create the object, Hilton received the actual prop used in the movie. He then saw a screening of the film to get inspired, Regan said. He also hopes The Golden Bowl will be just the beginning of Steuben's partnership with the movie industry. If this project takes off, I see some more collaborations between the movie industry and Steuben, whether it be with gold or whether it be designing for movies or designing collectibles for movies," Regan said. "At this point, we don't know if we'll start using gold in other pieces regularly. It's been a fun project for our designers and our glass blowing team, and you never know where inspirations come from." |
